AURORA, ILL %u2013 Red, irritating diaper rash helped Pamela Kopcio go green. Kopcio, the owner of newly opened Green Bebe, had been struggling to find a fix for her daughter%u2019s persistent diaper rash. A trip through cyberspace exposed Kopcio to the ever-so-modern world of cloth diapers %u2013 with all its acronyms, styles and features %u2013 and left her slightly overwhelmed. When Kopcio was unable to find community resources to help her get started cloth diapering her baby, she vowed to help other moms who wanted to use cloth but needed some initial assistance. %u201CTwo weeks into our adventures with cloth diapers, my husband, who had been reluctant to try them, confessed that this was one of the best decisions I had made. Our daughter had never been happier, we were saving a few bucks and, even more importantly, we were saving two tons of non-biodegradable waste from landfills,%u201D Kopcio said of her family%u2019s switch to cloth diapers. %u201COur choice to move toward a greener lifestyle was for our children and future generations.%u201D And Kopcio%u2019s green trend isn%u2019t alone in the Chicago area %u2013 green architecture, hybrid vehicles and green dining are all the rage. %u201CWe have a responsibility to care for and nurture this planet, to make it a better place for generations to come,%u201D Kopcio said. %u201COur ideals are that of our community, strong families and good environmental stewardship.%u201D Part of her desire to go green with diapers is knowing her facts about disposable diapers which are, according to the Real Diaper Association, the third largest single consumer item in landfills, representing approximately 4 percent of solid waste. The disposable diapers used on a child still won%u2019t have decomposed long after that child%u2019s great-great-grandchildren are gone, the RDA states. Further, the RDA explains that making the diapers is a huge waste of energy %u2013 it takes more than 2.3 times the amount of water used with cloth to manufacture and use disposable diapers, as well as 20 times the amount of raw materials. %u201CThe long-term damage directly related to disposable diapers is devastating, but with a minimal amount of effort, that damage could be avoided,%u201D Kopcio said. %u201CCloth diapering fosters conservation and recycling %u2013 two elements key to a greener lifestyle. Going green with cloth diapers is a simple way to assist with the conservation of our valuable resources, and I can find no better way to educate my children on the importance of recycling and conservation than through our daily actions. %u201C Green Bebe is an online baby boutique and local resource. Kopcio offers a myriad of cloth diapering options, including all-in-one diapers (just put on the baby similarly to a disposable), pockets (place an insert inside the diaper and put the diaper on similarly to a disposable), fitteds (which have elastic in the legs and require a cover) and prefolds (which are the diapers generations past used but instead of diaper pins, parents can use a plastic Snappi to hold it together.) And Green Bebe offers multiple types of covers, including wool and fleece. All these diapering options can be confusing for someone new to using cloth and Kopcio, remembering how she felt, offers phone consultations, in-person consultations and workshops for local families. Green Bebe also stocks diapering accessories, baby carriers and wraps, baby skin care items and breastfeeding accessories.
